Homage to Our Beloved Family Pet and Mascot

Earlier this week, we sadly bid farewell to Yoda, our cherished Giant Day Gecko and family mascot. His journey, spanning an extraordinary 17 and a half years, not only captivated us but also offered profound lessons in resilience. This blog celebrates Yoda’s life and the enduring lessons we can learn from his resilient nature.

A Gecko’s Journey from Hawaii to Midlothian

In the early days of owning my sign company, Behold! Signs and Graphic Solutions in Midlothian, IL, my wife and I travelled to Hilo, Hawaii, on the Big Island. We went there for training as new owner-operators within the SignWorld family of companies, a franchise-like business opportunity. Amid the lush landscapes of Hawaii, we encountered the beautiful and agile Day Geckos. These geckos, originally from Madagascar, had adapted remarkably well to the Hawaiian environment, thriving among other invasive species like rats, mongooses, feral cats, and dogs. Their ability to adapt and thrive in a new environment provides a lesson in grit.

Although we couldn’t bring one of these captivating creatures back home, the Chicago Reptile House in Orland Park, IL, provided a perfect alternative. That Christmas of 2006, Santa brought our family Yoda, a Giant Day Gecko who would become much more than a pet.

Yoda: The Gecko Who Defied the Odds

The literature on Giant Day Geckos suggests a lifespan of 6-8 years, with a maximum of around 15 years in captivity. Yoda, however, defied these expectations, living an impressive 17 1/2 years. He became a fixture in our lives and even the mascot of our sign company, gracing our minivan with his cartoon likeness. Every day began and ended with Yoda: spraying him with water in the morning as he basked under his heat lamp and doing the same at night before turning off his sunlight lamp.

Yoda’s journey was marked by several notable challenges that highlighted his resilient spirit:

  1. Surviving Multiple Moves: Our family faced significant upheaval, including bankruptcy and foreclosure after the recession and the closing of the sign company. This forced us to move from our home to a rental house and eventually to our current home after we rebounded financially. Yoda adapted to each new environment with remarkable ease, demonstrating resilience amidst change.
  2. Enduring Physical Hardships: Yoda survived the loss of both his hemipenes (reproductive organs) and a few bad skin-sheds, undoubtedly painful experiences. His ability to continue thriving despite these issues testifies powerfully to his grit.
  3. Escaping and Being Recaptured: On a few occasions, Yoda managed to get loose. Each time, I had to carefully catch him using a Tupperware container, ensuring his safe return to his terrarium. His survival during these escapes highlighted his tenacity and adaptability.

Wisdom from Yoda’s Behaviors

Yoda’s life taught us several valuable lessons that we can apply to our own lives:

  1. Get Vitamin D: Just as geckos require UV light for essential vitamins, we, too, need sunlight for our health. Spending time outdoors and soaking in natural light can boost our mood and energy levels.
  2. Watch Your Diet: Yoda’s diet consisted of crickets, tomato worm caterpillars, mashed fruit, and his favorite, Repashy gecko food—a mix of fruit and insect protein. We must maintain a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients for our well-being.
  3. Hydrate: Day Geckos hydrate by drinking water droplets from leaves and surfaces. Similarly, we must stay hydrated to support our own health, aiding in digestion, circulation, and temperature regulation.
  4. Get Plenty of Rest: Yoda knew the importance of rest, often hiding out of sight to conserve energy. Adequate rest essentially allows our bodies and minds to repair and rejuvenate, improving our overall health and productivity.
  5. Exercise: Despite his love for rest, Yoda could move quickly when needed. Regular rigorous physical activity keeps our bodies strong and agile, enhancing our ability to cope with physical and mental stress.
  6. Embrace Change: Day Geckos shed their skin as they grow, a process that can be uncomfortable but ultimately leaves them more vibrant. Embracing change, even when it’s challenging, can lead to our own growth and renewal.
  7. Reinvent Yourself: Yoda evolved from a novelty gift to a company mascot, a beloved pet, and my daily companion. Reinvention allows us to adapt and thrive in new circumstances.

Yoda’s story serves more than just the tale of a pet; it’s a narrative of resilience and adaptation. From his origins in the local pet store to becoming our cherished family member, Yoda’s journey testifies to the power of grit and sticktoitiveness. His life, marked by adaptability, strength, and growth, offers lessons that resonate deeply with our own experiences.

As we remember Yoda, let’s carry forward the lessons he taught us. In the face of adversity, may we find the strength to adapt, grow, and thrive, just like our beloved Giant Day Gecko. Rest in peace, Yoda. Your legacy of resilience lives on in our hearts and actions.
