What is the one thing you can do to make more money, surround yourself with people you love, and truly make the world a better place?.

In episode 107 of the Harmonious Workplaces podcast, co-hosts Rich Cruz and Ben Kleinman sit down with John Hibbs, an organizational expert joining the show from the island of Guernsey. Together, they dive deep into John’s groundbreaking framework: the Monergy Flow.

If you are a business owner, leader, or consultant looking to drive sustainable growth while fostering an incredible workplace culture, this episode is a must-listen. Here is a comprehensive summary of John’s insights on how prioritizing your people creates a self-sustaining cycle of success.

From Failing Fitness Coach to Thriving Entrepreneur

John’s journey to creating the Monergy Flow model was built on a foundation of early failure, coaching, and curiosity. After university, John started a personal fitness training business in London that struggled to get off the ground. His turning point came when the universe gifted him a new client—an Australian business coach named Les.

Les offered John a deal: free business coaching in exchange for free personal training. Through Les’s mentorship, John learned two foundational lessons that changed his life:

  1. Measure everything: You must measure what is happening in your business and use that data to make informed decisions.
  2. Business is about connection: At its core, business is entirely about people, relationships, and human connection.

Les also taught John about the power of perception and storytelling. He advised John to buy a nice car to project an image of success to his prospective clients. Once John began acting the part of a highly successful trainer, his business exploded, eventually leaving him with a waiting list of clients, full-time staff, and a deep sense of fulfillment.

The Illusion of Business

One of the most profound realizations John shares in this episode is that concepts like time, money, and even businesses themselves are entirely fabricated constructs. John uses the history of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) to illustrate how humans collectively invent systems, like time zones, simply because we all agree to believe in them.

Because a business is just a story that we create, leaders have the power to write that story in any way they choose. If you tell an authentic story, you will naturally attract clients and employees who believe in your vision.

Decoding the Monergy Flow

Using the lessons from his early career, John developed the Monergy Flow, a business model that proves financial success and human well-being fuel one another. While most people believe the ultimate starting point of a business is making money, the Monergy Flow completely flips the paradigm.

Here is how the continuous cycle works:

  • Humans First: Everything starts with the humans. Leaders must build a team of fantastic individuals united by a shared purpose and mission.
  • Brand Personality: Because a business does not actually exist on its own, it cannot have a personality; the humans inside the organization are the ones who create the brand.
  • Authentic Marketing: John defines marketing through the eyes of a 10-year-old student who told him marketing is simply saying, “Hello, here I am”. When your team is authentic, your marketing naturally attracts people who align with your values.
  • Selling Experiences: We aren’t just buying and selling products or services; we are buying experiences.
  • Money & Reinvestment: When you market authentically and sell great experiences, the money naturally follows. However, the flow doesn’t stop there. Profits must be reinvested back into the humans. By providing your people with security, purposeful work, and genuine love, you create a stronger, more resilient team.

The Flywheel Effect: Better Workplaces, Better Communities

When you implement the Monergy Flow, it creates an incredibly positive, self-fulfilling flywheel. As John explains, if you build an organization full of happy, loved, and secure humans, they don’t leave those feelings at the office. Happy humans go home and create happy families, and those families go out and build happy communities.

Ultimately, if you focus entirely on your people, your brand, and the experiences you provide, the bank account will take care of itself.
