The Power of a Sense of Community in the Workplace
At Harmonious Workplaces (our blog and podcast) and Harmonious Workplaces (our consulting firm), we believe in fostering positive and productive work environments. We are fascinated by how people work together in an organization, particularly when their work begets positive outcomes. This blog explores a sense of community as a force for organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs).
Recently, I explored the power of community art-making in schools, highlighting the impact of collaboration on student motivation and achievement. This experience resonated deeply as I participated in in-person Advanced Manufacturing Bootcamp training at the Technology and Manufacturing Association of Illinois (TMA). Working alongside others reaffirmed the importance of social interaction in boosting self-efficacy and accelerating learning. Through these shared experiences, workers learn from others and gain confidence in their abilities. This realization highlights the critical role of community in the workplace.

The Science of Belonging
Research across various fields demonstrates the immense value of a strong sense of community at work. Shawn Achor (2018), in his book Big Potential, emphasizes that human beings thrive in environments that foster connection and belonging. When employees feel like they belong to something bigger than themselves, their brains release oxytocin, a hormone associated with trust, collaboration, and happiness. This, in turn, fuels our motivation, creativity, and overall well-being.
Building a Foundation of Trust and Respect
A study published in the Journal of Community Psychology by Boyd and Larson (2023) explored the link between organizational conditions and a sense of community (SOC) within healthcare systems. Their findings suggest that factors like trust and respect foster a sense of community. When employees within this work and social community feel valued, heard, and supported by their colleagues and superiors, it creates a foundation for collaboration and shared success.
Community as a Catalyst for Professional Growth
Building a community of practice within an organization creates fertile ground for professional development. In her thesis, Kathleen Cua (2020) explores how this model empowers teachers to build self-efficacy and find value in learning environments personalized to individuals. Just like in my manufacturing training experience, a sense of community allows those individuals to learn from each other’s strengths, share best practices, and provide mutual encouragement. This collaborative approach fosters a growth mindset and propels individual and collective advancement forward.
Lessons from History’s Greatest Storyteller
My colleague, Lisa Apolinski (2024), in her book The Greatest Personal Brand Story Ever Told, draws a fascinating parallel between building a community and Jesus’ successful brand strategy. She argues that the creation of a strong community, starting with the twelve apostles, became a critical element in His success. This historical and Biblical anecdote shows the power of shared purpose and belonging when building a movement, a company culture, or a more harmonious workplace.
Practical Steps to Build a Workplace Community
Now that we’ve established the “why” behind fostering a sense of community let’s explore some practical steps to achieve this in your organization:
- Open Communication Channels: Encourage open communication and information sharing across all levels of the organization. This involves listening to feedback and clearly delivering communication, leveraging information-rich channels. Organizational leaders can achieve this through regular team meetings, town halls, and/or digital communication platforms.
- Celebrate Achievements, Big and Small: Recognize and celebrate individual and team accomplishments. This reinforces a sense of shared purpose and motivates everyone to contribute their best.
- Invest in Team-Building Activities: Organize team-building events that encourage collaboration and help employees connect personally. This could involve volunteering for a cause your company supports, participating in a company retreat or outing, creating an intramural competitive event, or simply having a casual team lunch.
- Create Opportunities for Informal Interaction: Designate break areas that encourage people to interact outside of work tasks. These areas can include a game room, a comfortable lounge, an outdoor picnic area, or even a designated coffee break area with plenty of seating.
- Mentorship Programs: Implement a mentorship program where experienced employees can guide and support newer team members. This fosters a sense of community by creating a network of support and knowledge-sharing.
- Recognize the Power of Diversity: A strong community thrives on diversity. Develop a culture employees can embrace that celebrates different backgrounds, perspectives, and skillsets. This creates a richer work environment for everyone.
Building a More Harmonious Workplace
By prioritizing community building, organizations can reap a multitude of benefits. A strong sense of belonging promotes a more harmonious workplace for everyone, from increased employee engagement and productivity to improved communication and problem-solving. Successful leaders build communities on shared experiences, mutual respect, and a sense of belonging. When employees feel valued, connected, and supported, they are more likely to thrive both personally and professionally.
Taking Action
Start by implementing some of the practical steps mentioned above. Encourage open communication, celebrate successes, and create opportunities for informal interaction. By prioritizing community building, you’ll be well on your way to fostering a more harmonious and successful workplace at your organization.
